England's ageless wonder Bland grabs US Open lead at 48
Richard Bland leaped into the early clubhouse lead in Friday's second round of the US Open.
LA JOLLA (AFP) - England s Richard Bland, who won the first European Tour title in his 25-year career last month, leaped into the early clubhouse lead in Friday s second round of the US Open.
The 48-year-old Southampton resident fired a four-under-par 67 at Torrey Pines to finish on five-under 137 for 36 holes, one ahead of American Russell Henley, who had yet to tee off after shooting 67 on Thursday.
"I m feeling pretty good about my game," Bland said. "I ve been driving the ball good for five or six weeks now."
Bland captured last month s British Masters after 478 starts over a quarter-century, becoming the oldest winner in European Tour history.
Now he s a threat to become the oldest winner in US Open history, breaking the mark of 45 set by American Hale Irwin in 1990 at Medinah.
Bland might change his plans if he does make history.
"I ve got a flight back on Sunday night. I m due to play in Munich next week," Bland said. "I might skip it. I might by a new ticket and come home a couple days later."
It would also give him a chance to live a dream at an event he s only seen on television -- the Masters.
"There s nothing like the back nine at the Masters," Bland said. "Hopefully, if I can keep playing the way I m playing, I can have that experience."
It s an inspirational age-defying tale to rival that of Phil Mickelson, who won the PGA Championship last month at Kiawah Island at age 50 to become the oldest-ever major winner.
Six-time major winner Mickelson, a six-time US Open runner-up trying to complete a career Grand Slam this week, opened on 75.
Bland lost his tour spot in 2019 but regained his status thanks to Challenge Tour rankings.
Bland is making only his fourth career major start after missed cuts at the 1998 British Open and 2009 US Open and a share of 22nd at the 2017 British Open.
It s only the second American tournament for Bland after missing the cut 12 years ago at Bethpage.
Bland began on the back nine Friday and rolled in a birdie putt from just over 28 feet at the 10th hole, then sank another from just inside 10 feet at the par-5 13th.
World number 115 Bland answered a bogey at the 15th with an 18-foot birdie putt at the par-3 16th and a 10-foot birdie putt at 17, but needed four to reach the green after finding dense left rough at the par-5 18th and made bogey.
After pitching from a bunker to two feet and saving par at the first, Bland rolled in a seven-foot birdie putt at the second, dropped his approach three feet from the cup and birdied the fourth to seize the lead alone and sank a 12-foot birdie putt at the sixth to reach 6-under, two ahead of the field.
Bland found a bunker at the par-3 eighth and missed a 26-foot par putt for a bogey that trimmed his lead, then closed with a par at the ninth.
Two-time Masters champion Bubba Watson fired a 67 to share third on 139.
South African Louis Oosthuizen, who finished a first-round 67 Friday morning, was also in the pack on 3-under with Spain s Rafa Cabrera Bello and Italy s Francesco Molinari.
Oosthuizen, the 2010 British Open champion, made bogeys at the sixth and par-3 11th holes in his second round but sank a 30-foot birdie putt at the 14th.
